Motors are used to make robots move, to make cranes lift, to make pinball machines work, and much more. But how do they work? And how can you build your own?

In this course you’ll learn how to build your own motor. It will be a simple motor, so that you’ll understand how it works. Later you can take the principles learned in this course to build your own motors that are stronger and better.

You’ll first create an electromagnet, which is what electric motors are based upon. Then you’ll use the principles learned to build your own electric motor.

To build everything in this course, you need:

  • A 1.5V flashlight battery: A 1.5 V battery (type C) that is common in old flashlights.
  • Stiff, insulated wire: Some stiff wire with insulation. Standard hook-up wire works fine.
  • Two magnets: Two small magnets, the stronger the better.
  • Tape: Tape to fasten everything.
  • Paper cup: A cup to work as the motor’s base. Could also be a plastic cup.
  • Bolt: Choose a big one to make room for many turns with the wire.
  • Switch: A switch to turn the magnet on and off.
  • A wire cutter: To remove the insulation from the wires.

I love electronics, and I've been building things with electronics since I was a kid. It such a great feeling when you build something and it works! And I want more people to have that.

Since I was a kid trying to learn electronics, I always felt that electronics was taught in a very complicated way. So since 2012 I've been working on new ways to teach electronics so that beginners can quickly get up to speed and start building cool things.
